How the Passion for Film Locations Began
“Actually, my passion for tracking down iconic filming locations didn’t start with James Bond. In fact, it didn’t even start with a movie. It started with a book.
As a big fan of Dan Brown’s novels – you may remember The Da Vinci Code, later made into a movie starring Tom Hanks – I had to travel to Rome for a business meeting in 2003. By coincidence, it was just after I had read Brown’s Rome-set thriller Angels & Demons. I simply couldn’t resist postponing my flight home for a few hours and setting out to find some of the book’s key locations – all the way to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, with Angels & Demons in my hand!
A passion was born. Ever since, whenever my travels have taken me anywhere near an iconic film or TV location, I haven’t been able to resist seeking out the original spots: from Mulholland Drive in Hollywood to Place de l’Estrapade, where Emily lives in Emily in Paris, and even a cocktail at the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, where James Bond dines in The Man with the Golden Gun…”
“…James Bond had always fascinated me. So when my Porsche road trips first took me to the Furka Pass, it became a very special adventure to track down the Goldfinger locations together with my son – who was still in elementary school at the time.
It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Over the years, I’ve returned many times and done a great deal of research behind the scenes. There are still details I want to get to the bottom of!
So from the very beginning, it was clear that these places would have a special place in the EPIC ROADS guides. Bond, of course – but also anything else with cult movie status that can be found along our mountain passes. And since my youngest daughter is a big fan of Der Bergdoktor and Die Bergretter, naturally they had to be included as well.
I’m sure I can share a few interesting tips with you – and tell you some stories from behind the scenes that you may not have heard before.”
